The Importance of Pre Workout Nutrition
I wish I’d paid more attention to the importance of pre workout nutrition!
For some reason I’ve never been able to get acquainted with food first thing in the morning, until now!
So why is Pre Workout Nutrition so important?
I’ve been told many things, especially during my journey through the menopause. FAST - DON’T FAST ?It can be so confusing and it also depends on your individual goals.
Personally I tend to agree with the science and as a 53 yr old in menopause - I want to get the absolute best that I can from my workouts.
Here’s what I’ve learnt👇🏼
1. Energy for Intense Workouts:
When you consume a balanced meal or snack before hitting the gym, you provide your body with a readily available source of energy.
2. Preserving Muscle Mass:
Eating before a workout helps prevent muscle breakdown during exercise which is critical in menopause! In the absence of adequate glycogen reserves, your body might turn to muscle protein for energy through a process called gluconeogenesis.
3. Optimising Nutrient Delivery:
Timing your pre-workout meal ensures that nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats are available when your body needs them the most. Carbohydrates provide quick energy, protein supports muscle repair and growth and healthy fats aid in overall nutrient absorption.
4. Enhancing Performance and Focus:
Adequate pre-workout nutrition not only fuels your muscles but also sharpens your mental focus and concentration during training sessions.
5. Long-Term Muscle Health:
Consistently fueling your body before strength training sets the stage for long-term muscle building and strength gains. By meeting nutritional needs before workouts, you create an environment conducive to muscle repair & growth.
6. Hormonal Balance:
Menopause is accompanied by significant hormonal shifts. Fasted training, especially if prolonged can further stress the endocrine system and affect hormonal balance. Balanced nutrition before exercise supports stable blood sugar levels, crucial for hormone regulation and overall menopausal health.
👋🏼Everyone has individual goals - so always consult a specialist, who can advise you personally!
